U.S. Sen. John Fetterman experienced a 'ventricular fibrillation flare-up' during an early morning walk, leading him to feel light-headed and fall. He is currently hospitalized in Pittsburgh, doing well despite minor facial injuries, and is under routine observation as doctors adjust his medication regimen. Ventricular fibrillation is the most serious form of abnormal heartbeat and can lead to cardiac arrest. Fetterman, 56, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 2022, which can cause such irregular heartbeats and is a known cause of ventricular fibrillation. He also has atrial fibrillation, which caused a stroke in 2022, leading to the implantation of a pacemaker with a defibrillator. Lingering effects from his stroke include auditory processing disorder, and he was previously hospitalized for clinical depression in 2023.
