Kouri Richins was sentenced to life in prison without parole for fatally poisoning her husband, Eric. Her three young sons made emotional statements in court, urging the judge to keep their mother incarcerated, citing fear for their safety and detailing her neglect.

Kouri Richins received a life sentence without parole for the aggravated murder of her husband, Eric Richins, whom she fatally poisoned with fentanyl in March 2022. The sentencing followed emotional victim impact statements from the couple's three young sons, who explicitly asked Judge Richard Mrazik to keep their mother in prison, fearing for their safety if she were released. The boys, referred to as A.R., W.R., and C.R., detailed their mother's alleged neglect, frequent drunkenness, and how she locked them in their rooms. They also recounted instances of animal neglect leading to deaths. Prosecutors argued Richins killed her husband due to marital troubles, a years-long affair, and spiraling debt, also convicting her of attempted murder weeks earlier, insurance fraud, and forgery. Despite Kouri Richins' defense attorneys planning an appeal and her own tearful statement to her sons denying the murder and promising to 'come home,' the judge deemed her 'too dangerous to ever be free.' The sons, now cared for by their paternal aunt and uncle, expressed feeling happier and safer with their mother incarcerated.
