A new US-backed peace proposal for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, heavily favoring Russia, has caused alarm in Kyiv and Europe, proposing Ukraine cede Donbas and limit its military, while barring NATO membership.

After nearly four years of conflict, a new US-backed peace initiative aims to end the Russia-Ukraine war, sparking intense diplomatic activity. The 28-point proposal, presented to Ukraine, has caused significant concern in Kyiv and other European capitals due to its pro-Russian tilt. Key demands include Ukraine ceding its entire eastern Donbas region to Russia, limiting its military to 600,000 personnel, and permanently barring Ukraine or any new member from joining NATO. Furthermore, it rules out NATO troops in Ukraine and offers no commitment from the US or European nations for Ukraine's defense against future Russian attacks. In return, Russia would commit to no further attacks, facing sanctions if violated. Ukraine and its European allies have vehemently opposed the plan, arguing it rewards Russian aggression. They have put forward counterproposals, advocating for lifting military limitations, keeping future NATO membership open, and deferring territorial discussions until after a ceasefire. Despite the contentious nature, President Trump expressed optimism, stating, "I think we’re getting very close to a deal."
