Venus Williams, at 45 years old, made history by becoming the oldest woman to compete in the Australian Open singles main draw, surpassing the previous record set by Japan's Kimiko Date. Playing as a wild-card entry and ranked No. 576, Williams faced Olga Danilovic in the first round. Despite a valiant effort, Williams lost 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4. A highlight of the match saw Williams lead 4-0 in the third set before Danilovic mounted a remarkable comeback, winning six consecutive games, including a pivotal 14 1/2 minute service game from Williams at 4-4. Williams expressed pride in her performance, stating she is playing better with each match and is still learning. She will continue her Australian Open journey in the doubles competition. Danilovic, ranked No. 68, described playing against Williams as an honor.
