Tensions escalate as Iran warns of missile strikes deep into Europe and threatens to completely close the Strait of Hormuz, prompting US ultimatums, surging oil prices, and fears of widespread conflict.

The international community is gripped by escalating tensions after Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu warned that Iran possesses the capacity to strike deep into European cities like London, Paris, and Berlin. This comes amid a volatile standoff centered on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route which Iran has de facto blockaded, causing oil prices to surge past $100 a barrel and diesel costs to rise. US President Donald Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum, threatening to "obliterate" Iran's power grid if the strait is not fully opened. In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guards declared they would completely shut the Strait of Hormuz and target energy infrastructure in the region, including countries hosting US bases, if its power plants are attacked. Recent military actions include an Israeli attack on an Iranian gas field, followed by Iranian strikes on Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait. Iran also launched two ballistic missiles at the US-UK Diego Garcia military base, though both were unsuccessful. Despite Trump's claims of having "obliterated" Iran's missile infrastructure, these subsequent launches have raised doubts. The UK's Housing Secretary Steve Reed has sought to reassure the public about Britain's safety, even as the UK condemned Iran's "reckless" actions and allowed US use of British bases for "defensive operations." Economically, stock markets are predicted to fall, and there are warnings of interest rate rises due. The US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent affirmed the US has ample funds for the conflict, seeking supplemental congressional funding. Diplomatic efforts are underway, with Turkey engaging various parties, and Ukrainian President Zelensky calling for improved US-UK relations amidst the crisis. Gulf Arab states face particular vulnerability, being highly reliant on desalination plants, which Iran has also threatened.
