On Sunday, September 28, 2025, at 10:25 a.m., Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old former US Marine and Iraq war veteran, carried out a horrific attack at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan. Sanford rammed his vehicle into the church, which was occupied by hundreds of worshipers, including children. He then emerged with an assault rifle, opened fire, and deliberately set the building ablaze using an accelerant, believed to be gasoline. Explosive devices were also discovered at the scene. The rampage resulted in four deaths and at least eight injuries, with one victim in critical condition. Law enforcement officers quickly responded, engaging Sanford in a shootout in the parking lot and killing him approximately eight minutes after the incident began. The FBI is leading the investigation into the 'targeted violence,' searching for a motive. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer offered condolences, and striking nurses from a nearby hospital assisted first responders. Following the attack, bomb threats were reported at other local churches, and several major cities increased security at places of worship. This incident was the 324th mass shooting in the US in 2025.
