The U.S. is warning shipping companies of sanctions for paying Iran for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a move by Iran after closing the strait. This comes as the U.S. maintains a naval blockade on Iranian tankers, Trump rejects Iran's peace proposal, and Iran executes alleged Israeli spies, further intensifying the regional standoff.

The United States has issued a stern warning to shipping companies, threatening sanctions if they make payments to Iran for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This warning targets Iran's practice of charging fees – including cash, digital assets, or in-kind payments – for detouring ships after it had effectively closed the strait following a U.S.-Israel war. In retaliation, the U.S. initiated a naval blockade on April 13, preventing Iranian tankers from leaving and cutting off vital oil revenues. Concurrently, U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's latest peace proposal, expressing dissatisfaction with its terms and criticizing Iran's leadership, although phone negotiations persist. Further escalating regional tensions, Iran announced the execution of two men convicted of spying for Israel, one accused of transmitting sensitive information about the Natanz nuclear enrichment facility. Meanwhile, China's U.N. envoy has urged Iran to lift restrictions, stressed the importance of maintaining the ceasefire, and called for negotiations to reopen Hormuz, attributing the current crisis to what he termed "the illegitimate war by the U.S. and Israel."
