A groundbreaking study from Turkey suggests that laughter therapy, a simple and free technique, could significantly improve breathing and overall health for millions suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The trial found benefits comparable to established breathing exercises, lasting weeks after the program.

Chronic respiratory diseases, like COPD, affect over 35 million Americans, making everyday tasks difficult due to severe shortness of breath and fatigue. COPD, a leading cause of death worldwide, also imposes a substantial financial burden on patients. Seeking accessible and low-cost complementary treatments, researchers at Hacettepe University in Turkey conducted a trial with 63 COPD patients. Participants were divided into three groups: one performed pursed-lip breathing exercises, another engaged in laughter therapy, and a control group received no therapy. Both active groups completed 30-minute sessions, three times a week, for eight weeks. Laughter therapy involved rhythmic clapping, playful vocalizations, laughter meditation, and relaxation. The study found that both pursed-lip breathing and laughter therapy significantly helped patients breathe easier, with these benefits lasting a month after the program ended. Patients in these groups also reported improved overall health, though their need for standard medical care remained constant. Researchers hypothesize that laughter exercises breathing muscles, promotes deeper exhalation, and releases endorphins, offering both physical and emotional relief. This research highlights laughter therapy as a promising, free, and home-based tool to help manage COPD symptoms, though more research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms.
