The incident occurred in the fourth inning when Michael Busch fouled off a pitch from Luis Mey, striking Bregman near the on-deck circle. Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed Bregman was hit in the left cheekbone, under the eye, and was bleeding from his nose with some swelling, calling it a "terrible, terrible accident." Bregman immediately left the field and was escorted to the clubhouse with blood visible. Teammates expressed their concern, with Busch calling it a "scary thing" and Pete Crow-Armstrong hoping for good news about his friend.
