A Sikh truck driver survived a brutal stabbing attack in a Wyoming rest stop bathroom, suffering multiple wounds to his neck and chest. The incident has deeply unsettled the Sikh community, who fear it's linked to a recent surge in anti-immigrant and anti-Sikh sentiment directed at truck drivers following controversial road incidents.
A Sikh truck driver was violently attacked from behind in a restroom at an Interstate 80 rest stop in remote Wyoming, sustaining stabs to the neck and chest along with over a dozen other cuts. Miraculously, he survived the assault. Police quickly arrested Andrew Kris Bzdak in nearby Carbon County on suspicion of attempted murder, after a family at the rest area heard the attack and followed the suspect's truck, tipping off authorities. Video footage also captured Bzdak following the victim into the restroom and then fleeing, with the wounded victim stumbling out afterward. While police state the motive is unknown, the Sikh community and its leaders are gravely concerned, linking the attack to escalating anti-Sikh sentiment and anti-immigrant rhetoric, particularly within truck-driving forums. This animosity has intensified following recent deadly crashes involving Sikh truck drivers, some of whom were undocumented, leading to hateful social media posts and debates over licensing. Community leaders, like Jasjit Singh of the Jakara Movement, assert that such crimes are difficult to separate from racism toward Sikhs. The victim is recovering and plans to return to driving, but leaders like Harsimran Singh, CEO of Gillson Trucking, fear an increase in similar attacks.
