On October 15, a 16-year-old gunman, Griffin John II, carried out a deadly rampage at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. Law enforcement quickly responded to reports of an "active shooter," arriving within two minutes. The shooter forced entry by firing through locked doors. Four people were killed in the attack: three children aged 5, 8, and 11, and one teacher. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher sustained critical injuries. The 5-year-old victim was identified as Rhoam Summer. The gunman reportedly used a long gun purchased by his mother. The rampage was brought to an end by Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old parent and carpenter, who, after hearing gunfire, pursued the armed suspect into a special education classroom and shot him, ending the threat. The shooter was dead shortly after police arrived. Authorities have not yet detailed a motive, and the investigation is ongoing. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and local school officials expressed their condolences and praised Giamanco's heroic actions, while some lawmakers called for stricter gun control.
