Stephen Colbert, a devoted J.R.R. Tolkien fan, is co-writing a new 'Lord of the Rings' movie titled 'Shadow of the Past' with his son, set to explore a new adventure for Sam, Merry, and Pippin.

Stephen Colbert, a well-known devotee of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, is set to co-write a new 'Lord of the Rings' movie, 'Shadow of the Past,' alongside his son. This film will follow Andy Serkis's 'The Hunt of Gollum,' which is scheduled for release next year. Colbert revealed that the idea for the film originated during a conversation with his son a few years ago, where he envisioned a framing device for a story focusing on Sam, Merry, and Pippin, 14 years after Frodo's passing. He expressed his desire to develop a narrative based on the unadapted early chapters of 'The Fellowship of the Ring,' aiming to create a story that is completely faithful to both Tolkien's books and the existing movie adaptations. The article also notes that Colbert's 'The Late Show' on CBS will air its final episode on May 21st, following its cancellation announcement last July.
