Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, who had significant NIL deals, has announced his departure from the Gators and entry into the transfer portal after an injury-riddled season and a coaching change, seeking a fresh start.
Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway has officially entered the transfer portal, announcing his decision on social media Monday. Lagway expressed gratitude for his time at the University of Florida, despite a challenging tenure marked by injuries and a coaching change. This past season, he completed 63% of his passes for 2,264 yards, throwing 16 touchdowns against 14 interceptions, and added 136 rushing yards with one score. His time at Florida was frequently interrupted by health issues, including core-muscle surgery recovery, a sore throwing arm, a strained calf, and a hamstring injury in 2024. The Gators' 4-8 record and the subsequent firing of coach Billy Napier, who initially recruited Lagway, contributed to speculation about his future. Napier's replacement, Jon Sumrall, is reportedly looking to take the quarterback position in a different direction. Although Lagway showed potential as a freshman, going 6-1 as a starter, his sophomore season saw a decline in performance, characterized by mechanical issues and a perceived lack of confidence. Lagway had substantial Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) agreements, earning millions from major brands and projected to make over $3 million in 2026. However, his value as a brand ambassador in Gainesville appeared to diminish, prompting his decision to seek a new program. In his farewell message, Lagway thanked his family, friends, teammates, coaches, training staff, and the entire Florida community.
