Epic Games, publisher of Fortnite, announced the layoff of 1,000 employees, approximately 20% of its workforce, to address significant financial and industry challenges.

Fortnite publisher Epic Games said Tuesday it is laying off 1,000 employees to save money as it grapples with industry-wide and company-specific challenges. CEO and founder Tim Sweeney stated in a memo that current market conditions are the most extreme the company has seen since its early days, comparing them to past upheavals like the move from 2D to 3D with Unreal 1, building console games with Gears of War, and shifting to online gaming with Paragon and Fortnite. These layoffs amount to about 20% of the company’s workforce, leaving Epic with 4,000 employees. This follows a previous large-scale layoff in 2023, when the company cut 830 jobs, which was about 16% of Epic’s workforce at that time.
