Actress and singer Suki Waterhouse recently tweeted about her absence from social media, revealing she developed a hernia from wearing extremely tight pants. This prompted the question: can tight pants really cause a hernia? Experts were consulted to provide clarity. A hernia is a hole in the abdominal wall resulting in the protrusion of tissue, often fat or intestine. While very common, symptoms vary; some are visible bulges, others are internal and cause aches or pressure. Inguinal hernias (in the groin) are most common. While hernias containing only fat are usually not dangerous, those containing intestines and causing pain risk intestinal blockage, requiring emergency surgery. Hernias can be present from birth or develop over time due to factors like wear and tear, weight gain, pregnancy, strenuous exercise, chronic cough, or constipation. However, experts overwhelmingly agree that tight pants alone do not cause hernias. They might exacerbate a pre-existing hernia by putting pressure on it, but they won't create one. Treatment options range from observation for non-painful hernias to surgery for painful or risky ones. Surgery aims to close the hole in the abdominal wall, sometimes using mesh. While congenital defects and surgical complications can increase hernia risk, maintaining a healthy weight, eating fiber, and careful lifting can help prevent them. Supportive clothing may also be beneficial for those who do heavy lifting.
