Robert F Kennedy Jr.'s health department is conducting a new review of mifepristone, the drug central to most American abortions, based on a study from the conservative Ethics and Public Policy Center. This study, which was not peer-reviewed and has been widely criticized by medical experts for flawed methodology and data transparency issues, dramatically inflated the rate of serious adverse health outcomes from mifepristone, claiming almost 11% compared to reliable studies finding less than 0.5%. Mifepristone has been proven safe and effective over 25 years of extensive medical trials and widespread patient use. The article argues this review is a politically driven effort by the Trump administration to limit pregnant women's freedoms and abortion access, aligning with other instances of using 'junk science,' like false claims about Tylenol causing autism. The Trump administration, influenced by the anti-abortion movement, has already curtailed abortion access through measures like barring Medicaid reimbursements for most abortion providers and supporting lawsuits from Republican states (Missouri, Idaho, Kansas, Texas, Florida, Louisiana) seeking to reverse FDA regulations that expanded mifepristone access via telemedicine and mail. The author emphasizes that mifepristone is crucial for safe abortion access, being a safer and more accessible alternative to surgery. Restricting its availability would strain abortion providers and could lead to a return to dangerous, illegal surgical abortions, posing severe risks to women's health and lives, as seen in the pre-Roe era. The article concludes that the threat to mifepristone is a direct threat to women's lives and autonomy.
