Donald Trump has fired Attorney General Pam Bondi after 14 tumultuous months, replacing her with Todd Blanche. Her ousting follows widespread criticism over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation and the Department of Justice's perceived politicization under her leadership.

Donald Trump announced the departure of Attorney General Pam Bondi after a turbulent 14-month tenure, appointing his former criminal defense attorney, Todd Blanche, as acting Attorney General. Trump praised Bondi on Truth Social, crediting her with a significant crime crackdown and stating she would transition to a private sector role. However, her firing comes amid bipartisan outrage regarding her management of the Jeffrey Epstein investigations, particularly the delayed and redacted release of related files, which became a major political liability for the administration. Trump was also reportedly frustrated by the Justice Department's inability to prosecute his political adversaries. Bondi's time at the Department of Justice was characterized by a radical transformation, widely seen as eroding the agency's historic independence from the White House. Her department allegedly forced out career prosecutors, faced judicial rebukes, abandoned numerous criminal prosecutions in favor of presidential directives like mass deportations, and shifted the Civil Rights Division's focus away from traditional anti-discrimination efforts to enforce anti-transgender and anti-diversity mandates. She also defended Trump's pardons for January 6 defendants and launched investigations based on his baseless claims of a "rigged" 2020 election. Despite her firing, Bondi is still compelled by a House Oversight Committee subpoena to testify on April 14 regarding the Epstein investigations. Lawmakers, including both Democrats and Republicans, have welcomed her departure and emphasized that her testimony is still expected, with Rep. Robert Garcia stating, "They are wrong — and we look forward to hearing from her under oath." Rep. Nancy Mace also criticized Bondi's handling of the Epstein files as "terrible" and undermining President Trump.
