Unprecedented! Russian Jets Invade Estonian Airspace, Igniting NATO Fears!
by Abigail Isaacson in PoliticsEstonia summoned a Russian diplomat after three Russian fighter aircraft illegally entered its airspace for 12 minutes on Friday. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna called the incursion "unprecedentedly brazen," marking the fourth airspace violation by Russia this year. Estonia's Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur initiated NATO Article 4 consultations, triggering a meeting of the North Atlantic Council to discuss the incident. Article 4 allows for consultations when a member's territorial integrity, political independence, or security is threatened. NATO's response included scrambling Italian F-35 fighter jets. The incident follows a similar incursion into Polish airspace and numerous other reports of Russian incursions and drone crashes. European governments are increasingly concerned, with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas calling the incursion an "extremely dangerous provocation." The head of Britain's MI6, Richard Moore, stated there's "absolutely no evidence" that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants peace in Ukraine, describing Putin as "mortgaging his country's future." MI6 also launched a dark web portal, "Silent Courier," to recruit spies, including from Russia. The Estonian military stated the Russian MIG-31 fighters lacked flight plans and had their transponders off. The reason for the violation is unknown, but Estonian officials suggest it could be an attempt to divert NATO's focus from supporting Ukraine.
