Trump's DC Power Grab: A Repeat of January 6th?
by Alice Ibarra in PoliticsOne of the most violent days in Washington, D.C.'s history was January 6th, 2021, instigated by Donald Trump. Now, Trump attempts another power grab in the capital following reports of a former "Department of Government Efficiency" (Doge) employee's assault. This echoes the 2021 event; both are illegitimate power grabs based on lies. In 2021, it was a lie about the 2020 election; in 2025, it's lies about crime rates, despite violent crime being at a 30-year low. Trump's actions include pardoning 1,500 individuals convicted for the January 6th attack, some of whom committed further crimes. The hypocrisy is blatant, often overlooked due to the focus on recent events. This violence enforces a right-wing order that protects in-groups while harming out-groups. The assaulted Doge employee is 19-year-old Edward Coristine. Doge's dismantling of USAID is estimated to cause over 14 million deaths by 2030. The Trump administration's violence includes mothers separated from children and brutalized immigrants. The attempted takeover aligns with right-wing agendas, targeting cities as diverse and inclusive spaces. Right-wing narratives portray cities as dangerous, justifying harsh law enforcement and authoritarianism. Figures like Charlie Kirk and Benny Johnson spread fear-mongering narratives about cities. Authoritarians wage war against cities, diversity, and rights, using lies and propaganda. Trump's actions distract from his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
