Vice President JD Vance used his tie-breaking vote twice in the Senate to advance a $9.4 billion rescissions package. This package includes cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), impacting NPR and PBS, and the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The Senate vote was initially tied 50-50, with three Republicans – Senators Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins – joining all Democrats in opposition. Senator Collins voiced concerns about the lack of transparency regarding specific program cuts within the $2.5 billion reduction to the Development Assistance account and criticized the cuts to public broadcasting as excessive. While expressing frustration with NPR's reporting, she highlighted the importance of local stations and CPB funding for crucial services like emergency alerts. The House previously passed the measure 214-212. The Senate will now debate the bill for 10 hours before a final vote, with the possibility of amendments and a subsequent House review.
