The Department of Justice claims the Kennedy Center is only 'temporarily' closing for seven days due to 'advanced deterioration' and potential safety risks, with the possibility of extended closure. However, Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty, a Kennedy Center board member leading the legal challenge, argues that this closure is a 'plain pretext' to permanently shut down or even demolish the building, violating existing injunctions. Beatty's legal team presented images of Trump reviewing a 'Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED' placard. While Judge Christopher R. Cooper denied Beatty's request for an emergency hearing, he clarified the requirement for the 30-day notice for any reversal of the Center's position against demolition or new construction. Previous rulings by Judge Cooper in May and last week blocked Trump's efforts to rename the venue, asserting that Congress intended it solely for John F. Kennedy. The Justice Department had previously argued that without Trump's name and 'unrivaled expertise,' the center would fall into such disrepair it would need to be 'taken down.'
