Horrific Bus Crash Kills 5 on NYC Trip!
by Amy Ivanov in AccidentA tour bus carrying 54 people returning to New York City from Niagara Falls crashed and rolled on its side Friday, resulting in five fatalities and numerous injuries. The crash occurred on Interstate 90 in Pembroke, New York, approximately 25 miles east of Buffalo. State police reported that the driver, who survived, appeared to have lost control, possibly due to distraction, causing the bus to flip over. Passengers ranged in age from 1 to 74, with several ejected from the vehicle. The deceased were all adults. Many passengers were trapped and required rescue. Dozens were transported to hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging from head trauma to broken bones. The majority of passengers were of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino descent, necessitating the use of translators during emergency response. Initial investigations ruled out mechanical failure or driver impairment as causes. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating. The bus was owned by M&Y Tour Inc., which has a satisfactory safety rating. Troopers noted that many passengers appeared not to be wearing seatbelts, although a new state law mandates seatbelt use on newer charter buses. The Thruway Authority temporarily closed a section of the highway. Governor Kathy Hochul expressed condolences to the victims and their families.
