Judge BLOCKS Trump Admin from Sharing Medicaid Data with ICE!
by Alex Ingram in PoliticsA federal judge has ordered the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to stop providing deportation officials with the personal information of Medicaid enrollees. This includes home addresses and Social Security numbers of all 79 million individuals enrolled in the program. The data sharing, which began in June, was revealed by an Associated Press report. Following the report, 20 states filed a lawsuit to stop the policy. In July, HHS and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) entered into an agreement granting DHS daily access to this sensitive data. Judge Vince Chhabria, in his decision, temporarily halts the data sharing for the 20 states involved in the lawsuit, emphasizing that using CMS data for immigration enforcement threatens Medicaid's operation. The judge's order will remain in effect until HHS provides justification for its data-sharing policy. HHS has not confirmed whether it will comply with the order but maintains the agreement with DHS is legal. The data sharing is part of a broader Trump administration effort to provide DHS with more data on migrants. Immigration advocates express concern that the data disclosure could deter individuals from seeking emergency medical care.
