A listeria food poisoning outbreak, linked to recalled heat-and-eat chicken fettuccine alfredo products from Kroger and Walmart, has claimed three lives and resulted in one pregnancy loss. Federal health officials announced the outbreak, affecting at least 17 individuals in 13 states, began last August. FreshRealm, the producer, is recalling products made before June 17th. Recalled items include 32.8-ounce and 12.3-ounce trays of Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo and 12.5-ounce trays of Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo with specific best-by dates. The listeria strain was detected in ill individuals from August to May, and a matching strain was found in a sample (destroyed before reaching stores) during a routine inspection in March. The exact contamination source remains unidentified. The CDC is investigating and will release further details. Consumers are urged to discard or return recalled products. Listeria infections can be severe, especially for vulnerable populations. The CDC reports approximately 1,600 annual listeria illnesses and 260 deaths.
