Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced a furious backlash from several Trump administration officials after vowing to oppose federal efforts to apprehend undocumented immigrants following immigration raids that resulted in 44 arrests. The raids sparked violent protests, requiring police intervention with flashbangs to disperse the crowds. Bass condemned the actions, stating her office is working with immigrant rights groups. However, this stance drew sharp criticism. Stephen Miller, former White House deputy chief of staff, asserted that Bass has "no say" in federal law enforcement. Sebastian Gorka, a former White House advisor, went further, accusing Bass of potentially aiding and abetting criminals and warning of potential criminal charges. Harmeet K. Dhillon, a Justice Department official, criticized Bass and other elected officials for their lack of understanding of federalism and immigration laws. The protests led to at least one arrest for obstructing federal law enforcement. A Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman decried the violence against ICE agents, while Richard Grenell, former special envoy, blamed Bass for inciting the unrest. The situation highlights the deep divisions over immigration enforcement and the role of local governments.
