A pre-midterm poll revealed widespread economic discontent among rural voters, a crucial Trump demographic, significantly contributing to Republican losses in key races due to soaring inflation, gas prices, and a perception of corruption.

Polling conducted by the Harris Poll for the Guardian before the midterms highlighted deep voter anger, particularly among rural constituents, which was a major factor in Republican setbacks. Over the summer, 95% of Americans perceived an affordability crisis due to high gas and grocery prices, with 61% believing the country was in a recession by October, despite technical definitions. This economic pain was acutely felt by rural voters, who reported being in 'survival mode' and disproportionately impacted by rising fuel costs, tariffs, and drought. Support for the economy among Republicans themselves plummeted from 49% in February to 28% in October. Rural Americans' belief that the economy was worsening increased 17% since Trump took office, far exceeding suburban and urban shifts. Rural voters were also more likely to perceive Republicans as having a bigger problem with corruption. Despite Trump's optimistic rhetoric about the economy, the reality of widespread economic hardship led to Republican losses in critical races, giving Democrats control of Congress. While Democrats vowed to address issues like healthcare and the economy, pre-election polls also showed significant voter uncertainty, with 34% believing neither party had a solution to the affordability crisis, indicating a broader lack of confidence in political solutions.
