President Donald Trump will visit the Federal Reserve building on Thursday, escalating his pressure on Chairman Jerome Powell. This is unusual, as presidents rarely visit the Fed headquarters and even more rarely call for the chairman's resignation. Trump's actions follow the Fed's pause on interest rate cuts, and he has openly criticized Powell, even suggesting a significant rate cut. While the visit was initially planned as an observation of the Fed's renovation project, which has gone over budget, Trump's participation significantly increases its symbolic weight. Trump has previously threatened to fire Powell, citing the renovation project as a potential reason. Although he later walked back the firing threat, stating Powell will be out soon anyway, Trump plans to make the remainder of Powell's term uncomfortable. The White House has suggested that the renovation may have violated planning requirements. Powell, however, maintains that the project has had proper oversight. The renovation includes addressing significant structural repairs, asbestos removal, and updating antiquated systems.
