Palestinian activist and Columbia grad Mahmoud Khalil arrested by ICE agents on campus, sparking outrage and legal battle.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and recent Columbia University graduate, from his university-owned apartment. His lawyer, Amy Greer, stated that ICE agents took Khalil into custody while he was at home. Columbia University released a statement addressing the incident, asserting that law enforcement needs a warrant to enter university buildings and vowing to comply with legal obligations and support its community. According to Greer, an ICE agent cited a State Department order revoking Khalil's student visa and green card, following President Trump's announcement to deport foreign student "agitators." This arrest comes after Trump's announcement to cut approximately $400 million in federal funding from Columbia for alleged noncompliance with anti-discrimination laws. Khalil had been a prominent figure in pro-Palestinian protests on campus.
