Violent protests and riots have erupted in Los Angeles following a series of ICE raids targeting migrants. Demonstrations began on Friday and escalated into widespread unrest on Sunday, with cars set ablaze, looting reported, and 42 arrests made. In response, President Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops and, controversially, up to 700 Marines, despite California Governor Gavin Newsom's objections and lawsuit claiming the deployment is illegal. Newsom has engaged in a war of words with Trump, even daring the president to arrest him. The White House claims LAPD hasn't been arresting protesters, a claim denied by the LAPD chief who cited communication issues with federal officials. The LAPD chief also expressed concern about the Marine deployment, emphasizing the need for coordination. Protests are ongoing, with Mayor Karen Bass calling for peace. A California union leader, David Huerta, was arrested and charged with impeding an officer during a demonstration. The situation remains tense, with the potential for further escalation.
